- "Four moons..."
- — Lance Carver upon seeing VolcanoWings, Raging Fires
Lance Caspian Carver[1] (known as "Silver" to the dragons)[2] is a male human who is the main protagonist of Shifting Stars.
Description[]
To an average dragon, Carver is small, about the size of a hatchling.[2] He has white skin, but not as white as an ArcticWing,[2] and grey eyes. He has a thatch of dark fur on his head and around his mouth. He wears a grey covering around his torse, a black covering around his legs, and a hard, black covering on his feet. He wields a metallic stick with a hole on one end of it, which he keeps at all times.[4][5]
Lance has pale skin, grey eyes, a deep bass voice, and a beard on his face. His brown hair is long, and halfway down his head like a tiny mane; this initially started as a teenage rebellion against his parents. He wears a dirty, long-sleeved grey shirt, and his long black pants and black shoes are in a similar state. He wielded a futuristic gun with him at all times before it was taken by the VolcanoWings.[1]
History[]
Turning Tides[]
Carver is first seen in a dream Tide has early on in the second act.
He makes his official debut after Tide wakes from her coma in the Community of Coasts, staying at Eel's side. When Eel finds water for Tide, Carver walks over to the OceanWing and pets her before climbing onto her head. When Eel returns, he notes that Carver has taken a liking to Tide.
Raging Fires[]
Carver is seen in the prologue being dumped into Nazareth alongside the other humans of Eukarya. He, alongside other humans, take Adamson out of the crowd to discuss humanity's next move.
Shifting Stars[]
Carver is the main protagonist of Shifting Stars.

Trivia[]
- “Lance” is an English name derived from Germanic name “Lanzo”, which was originally the short form of names that began with the Old Frankish or Old Saxon element “land”, which was derived from the Old German word “lant”. During the Middle Ages, the name became associated with the Old French word “lance” (“spear, lance”).[6] “Carver” is an English last name described someone who works as a carver; it is derived from the Middle English word “kerve”, which means “cut”.[7]
- Carver's character was loosely based on the character of Mills (Adam Driver) from the science-fiction/horror film 65 (2023) (which is by the same duo that created the Quiet Place franchise).[8] Although L1quid has no problem with the original character (they view him as a more militaristic version of Lee Abbott from A Quiet Place), they felt that the original character's naming was "off" and not thematic enough. (There are several characters in L1quid's books that are based on characters from the science-fiction, fantasy, and fiction genres.)[9]
- Carver was made the protagonist of the final book to ensure that the series wasn't just in the perspective of dragons. This role was originally given to several other characters (humans, dragons, and aliens) before he was chosen.[9]
- The initial candidates for book 3's main protagonist were Jonah, a male human who was isolated for the majority of his life and raised by dragons before being reincorporated due to the series' events; Nicholas Adamson, a male human and the physical/spiritual leader of said humans; and Peak, a male MountainWing who becomes part of the main team. Nicholas Adamson was the semifinal protagonist, as the book deals with losing everything and learning how to rebuild from that loss. Since Carver was heavily focused on throughout the books (as L1quid wrote them), he was made the protagonist and Adamson was demoted from "main protagonist" to "side character". Despite this, Adamson still plays a large role in the books.[9]
- Carver's first (indirect) appearance in These Alien Dragons was inspired by Alina Starkov dreaming about Morozova's Stag in season 1 of Shadow and Bone before its death at the hands of the Darkling. This was originally not thought out by L1quid in their final outline, but they decided to put in there anyway because they saw the show in April 2023 (it was on their "shows to watch" list) and they believe that dreams can reveal a character's state of mind in a story.[9]
- Lance's long hair initially started as teenage rebellion against his parents.[1]
